Kagerplassen, Netherlands, May 2002
Broek en Simontjes Molen (Mill) This beautiful mill stands on the Broek and Simontjes polder on the outskirts of Leiden.
't Joppe In contrast to the lakes of the Kagerplassen this lake originated from digging away sand for road construction. It is about 20 to 25 meters deep.
Farmstead 'De Eenzaamheid' ('Loneliness') As the farm is on an isolated island the people living there have to go ashore by boat or ferry. Everything, including cows, tractors, hay and milk is transported in this way.
Oude Kooi Water sportsmen also call this island 'Union Island' because it is owned by the Association (in Dutch: Unie) of Water Tourists. This 'Union' possesses several areas of land which its members can use for recreation.
Kaageiland (Kaag island) On this island you find the village of Kaagdorp with about 500 inhabitants. The island can only be reached by ferry.
Kaagdorp (Kaag village) The island has several farmhouses, restaurants, a marina, holiday cottages and a very famous shipyard.
'Tuinder' or 'Kogjes' polder The island with only one farmhouse does not have any gas, electricity or water. Shopping is done by boat and the children go to school by ferry. The Kogjes mill, built in 1809, keeps the island dry. This isolated family has a number of cows, chickens and geese and an extensive vegetable garden. They let their island to campers in summer.
Zwanerburgerpolder The Zwanerburger Mill dates from 1805 and was recently restored by the Foundation for Rijnland Mills. The cottage next to the mill is where the miller lives.
