Austria, July 2006

The following pictures were taken during my vacation in Austria in July 2006. The vacation was an extension of my visit there to attend the wedding of my friends Hans & Silvia.

Hochosterwitz Castle - Burg Hochosterwitz

The castle was high on a mountain. According to the signs you could either walk up the mountain in 20 minutes or take the cable-lift pictured right. Considering the height we didn't quite believe the 20 minute story, so took the cable lift instead!

My parents enjoying the great view from the castle

The pillars at the inner courtyard

A well in the inner courtyard

The castle had a small chapel as well

We rented a small boat here and the pictures below give an overview of the scenery

Ragga Gorge - Ragga Schlucht

Absolutely breathtaking... But make sure you bring your hiking boots and a good condition as it's a steep climb up the canyon and a steep walk down the forest afterwards!

Nockalmstrasse

A beautiful, windy road with - yes I know it gets boring - breathtaking views and scenery

To get to the Carinthian site of Turracher Hohe you had to go down a 23% slope. As the sign indicates you were strongly advised to put your car in first gear. And believe me, you really needed to do that!

The above picture is a plant that was used as a sort of cotton to fill pillows with!

Oops... kinda hard to get into or out of your car like this!

A wishing bell, with me making a very special wish
:-)

Some romantic soul left this message on the alm. Not sure if (s)he meant for my father to find it!

Almhüttendorf Turrach

Great place to stay with beautiful wooden cabins. Friendly and helpful people (I even got to borrow the iron of the restaurant owner's wife). Information that's kinda missing on their website is that you can bring your own linnens & towels or rent it over there. Also missing is that it's a good idea to bring your own toilet paper, or buy it there :-) Thank goodness we were well prepared :-)

This picture and the one on the right are the view from our cabin

And here's our cabin from the front...

... and from the back

My dad, cutting wood for the fire place (yes, it got chilly at night!)

The living room area and on the right the kitchen (bring kitchen towels!)

The fireplace, and on the right one of the two bedrooms. Each bedroom contained 3 beds.

My parents and I enjoying a drink, or two, or three...

And this is Frank, the restaurant owner, who taught me more about weizenbier :-)

The Wedding of Hans & Silvia

Above and right, the church in Stadl am Mur where the wedding took place

We walked from the meeting point to the church, first the music, then the bride & groom, then the guests...
