Thursday 18 January, 2001Letter to the Editor of the Daily MirrorJ uly 18, 1996Diana Petition Dear Editor: The following is an excerpt from a letter I sent an English friend of mine in October of 1995: "Friday also brought the catastrophic event of the week - Camilla Parker-Bowles (a.k.a. the rotweiller) on the cover of the Daily Mirror. It seems Charles took his mistress to the birthday party of a mutual friend at the Ritz. What is going on in that country of yours? I've got to write a letter to the Queen. I've never done it before but, she needs to know that we are all hoping that boy is no longer in any way capable of succeeding her. I mean this is a small planet and we don't need a "lavatory-minded adulterer*" whose life philosophy is obviously, Do as I say, not as I do on the throne of England. Maybe she could make an unprecedented move to remove him from the line of succession or take back his titles of "Prince of Wales" and "Duke of Cornwall" and with them all the money. Perhaps, a monetary hardship would get the boy's attention. Seriously, Elizabeth needs to do something fast before they move me to England to take over as Queen Eileen, "ER" - Eileen Royal. They could save lots of tax dollars by not having to have everything re-stencilled and I would have no problem demoting him. I'd be a national hero! Of course after they got wind of my affair with Andrew, (that's bound to happen) I'd probably get deported. I could see the article in the Daily Mirror now, "There was an American Girl with a little curl, right in the middle of her forehead, when she was good, she was very, very good and when she was bad, she was deported!" Of course in Andrew's diary, "affair" version, the last line would be, "and when she was bad, she was applauded!" That would be in a later edition of the paper after the excitement of the affair had started to wane." This I share to make you aware that however humorous my take on the Royal Soap Opera, I do believe that Queen Elizabeth, a woman I admire very much for her strength, her steadfastness and her loyalty to her country, hasn't the heart to reprimand her son. Her strength of character, her innate ability to see issues that affect the monarchy in black and white, seem to go quite awry when it comes to her son and heir, Prince Charles. Clearly, Charles does not deserve to be coddled any more than Diana deserves to be dismissed like yesterday's news. I agree that Diana deserves her HRH, however, I am unsure how much good it will do as her allowance for travel along with her ability to travel outside the country have been revoked. From what I've read, she will no longer be able to leave the country without the Queen's permission nor will any unapproved work be underwritten by the current monarchy. Honestly, Diana's divorce treatment makes the exile of the Windsor's look humane. Though they could never go home, they were at least free to roam the globe. This settlement leaves poor Diana tethered to home like the Prisoner Of Wales she once described herself as. I would strongly urge you to make another campaign to the Queen's Proctor - this campaign being to give Diana the means to continue her good work. For I fear that giving her back her HRH will be a curse if she is prevented from putting her status to good use due to financial hardship and political red tape. Maybe this would force the powers that be will to create the position of "Goodwill Ambassador" as suggested. All my best wishes for the success of your campaign. Even if nothing more comes of it then a bump in the proceedings, I believe Diana will understand that she is exactly what she wishes to be, "the Queen of people's hearts." Very truly, Eileen Sullivan This is a filler as Ive obviously missed my Wednesday evening deadline. It makes me well up at the end because I still hope that Diana knew that she was our Queen of Hearts and in our hearts - as she proclaimed was her wish. It also shows me that as much admiration as I have for the Queen, I dont always agree with her and that Ive been hoping that Prince Charles would receive his wake up call for a long time now. (Though I must say he has been better since my scathing article of 09 November 2000.) Im looking forward to hearing what your feelings about this incident in history were and if theyve changed any over the years. Sounds like it would be good input for another "Peoples View" column. ;-)
